Affirmative Action - Does It Work Today The Unites States Constitution, in Amendment XIV, Section 1, states, All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws. (1) Affirmative action can trace its roots back to the 14th amendment, although it did not really get started until Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act was passed, giving minorities equal employment rights. The overall strategy and outline for this plan were contained in Executive Order 11246, which was issued by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1972 (Gilbert et al. 2). This led to a wave of programs that were intended to further the equal employment opportunities for minority individuals. Affirmative action programs were intended to legally require organizations to be diverse. During the 1990's these programs have come under a lot of scrutiny and are being replaced with a concept known as diversity management. . Managing and valuing diversity are key aspects of organizational behavior, but the question lies in how to create the diversity within the organization. In this paper, I will examine several articles that will give us reasons that affirmative action should be replaced by divers ity management, as well as one that believes that affirmative action is still needed in today's society. Mary Guy believes that affirmative action programs are still needed today. She noted that if we lived in a perfect world we would not have a need for organizations to have affirmative action programs (240). However, since people have a tendency to work around people that are most like us, programs are needed to ensure that past discriminatory actions are corrected. Opposition to these programs generally has come from advantaged groups who feel that quotas will keep them from their jobs. Since the laws creating affirmative action never required quotas, then when quotas have been put in place, they are merely exceptions to the rule (Guy 242). Diversity in the workplace has been slowly increasing under affirmative action, however, Guy feels that this is no time to abandon it, but to keep it moving forward (242). Stigmatization revisited: Does diversity management make a difference in applicant success?, written by Jacqueline Gilbert and Bette Ann Stead, includes the results of experiments conducted at two universities. These experiments examined whether there was a greater perception of increased qualifications and competence when employees were hired under a system of diversity management versus an affirmative action plan. (Gilbert & Stead 1) The second article Diversity management: A New organizational paradigm, written by Jacqueline Gilbert, Bette Ann Stead, and John Ivancevich, defines diversity management and compares it to affirmative action. Furthermore they discuss strategies that will help to insure that a diversity management program is successful. (Gilbert et al. 1) In Stigmatization revisited? the authors performed experiments to determine the effects of affirmative action versus diversity management. Individuals, both women and those of color, that were hired under the guise of an affirmative action plan were generally viewed as less qualified than there peers. It was noted that the perception was that if they were qualified for the position, then they would have been no need for an affirmative action plan. Those individuals that were hired in an atmosphere of diversity management were not perceived as being more or less qualified than their peers. These results were especially evident when the job was a traditional male type, for example, an electrician (Gilbert & Stead 11). They concluded that an organization that valued and promoted cultural diversity would enable women and minorities to be perceived as competent for the positions that they held. Also those companies would have an inherent advantage when it came many other areas; including resource acquisition, marketing, creativity flexibility, and corporate attractiveness. Orwell once classified the book as a fairy story but it is to many other things to be simply classified so casually. It has been described as a fable, a political analysis, an allegorical lesson, but more importantly a satire on humane folly. Derived from his actual experiences with Soviet communism, Animal Farm delivers a strong message about the effects of power and superiority on the human conscience that can be applied not only to the status quo of Orwells time, but it serves as an astoundingly accurate depiction of many events over the course of history. For example it is a common Marxist theory that the ruling class would be overthrown by a lower class which would in turn become the new ruling class. The new ruling class would eventually be overthrown by the newly formed lower class, and so on. This a perfect example of what Orwell demonstrated in Animal Farm. He reminds us that it is easy forget to be compassionate when you shift from the oppressed to the oppressor because of the deceptiveness of power. One could even go as far as to apply this situation to the American Revolution. Once freed from tyranny of Britain, many of the states wasted no time in abusing there power with taxes and laws. More importantly, however, was the mistreatment of minorities. Slaves, Native Americans, and women were oppressed under under the statement that all men are created equal.. And even today you find the struggle for dominance: one party so convinced that their principles are better for the country than another. You cannot possibly have the best interest of the country in mind when you generalize the opinion of every citizen in the country or are naive enough to believe that you know how to run the lives of the people better than the people do. System Analysis And Design Learning Outcome Before getting into detail, it is important to understand the concept of System Analysis and Design. It is a study of interactive entities, including computer system analysis and designing the process of defining components, modules and etc. In this assignment I will work on the following three different phases. Each phase will cover the related content in detail. In the first part we will understand the different system life cycles models. In this part, I will discuss different life cycles and will discuss the importance of a following a procedural/staged life cycle in a system investigation. In learning outcome 2, I am going to explain the feasibility report, feasibility study and impact of different feasibility criteria on a system investigation for a particular garment shop. The purpose of feasibility study is to find the solutions or to investigate the tasks requirements, referencing this I will discuss the contents of feasibility report and when to use the feasibility study Third learning outcome is to be able to perform a system investigation in this we will undertake a system investigation to meet a business need. Use appropriate system analysis tools and techniques to carry out a system investigation. Then I will create documentation to support a system investigation and at last I will evaluate how user and system requirements have been addressed. In this assignment, each issue process would be discussed in detail to understand the basic concept. Task-1: (a): Waterfall Model: It is a very useful model which is widely used and its easy to understand as well, its a sequential design process which is flowing steadily downwards like water. It is a step by step process, if we will find any error so we would check from backward instead of directly going to that point of error. The following diagram shows the steps. images Analysis and Gathering Requirement: In this first step of waterfall model, the developer has to conduct a meeting with the costumer to know about his requirement for the software. After this stage they would have documentation so that it would be easy for the user to understand. Detailed Design and Coding: In this step the developer will make an actual model of software. The developer sees the problems in details. And if there is any error they would check and correct that which is also called coding. Testing: After implementation the developer sees the software weather it is working properly or not then he will do the testing. Delivery: This is the last phase, in which the developer correct all the errors and he will hand over the software to the client. Merits of Water Fall Model: This model is easy to understand for the user. It is good for small projects where requirements are well understood. Waterfall model is preferred in projects where quality is more important than schedule or cost. Demerits of Water Fall Model: It is costly and time consuming. If we want any change we have to go from below so its difficult. Not suitable for difficult or moderate projects. (b) Some of the models that dont have specific structures are: a) Code and fix: Its very easy and simple kind of model and consists of two steps. a) Write coding to the program b) Fixing the problem in that code This model is very simple as it doesnt need any proper team work, and each one would not be able to convince his point to the others so it saves time by fixing errors in the early ages. Merits of Code and fix: It is actually less time taking. Easy to use. Good for small projects as risk is reduction. Demerits of Code and fix: Its difficult to detect the errors. No time limits. Difficult for the large projects. b) Rapid prototyping: In this model the costumers are not familiar with the software so they dont know what kind of program they actually want. It is one among the easiest and user friendly model. It does not require any team work. It will be easy to understand for non-technical management. a) The developer will do that phase or step first according to the customers wish. b) The developer will do that step first which is easy and the phase which is difficult that part he will do at the end. Merits of Rapid Prototyping: a) Less chances of risk of incorrect user requirement. b) Its a user friendly. c) The developer can save the changes and it is easy to change the changes. Demerits of rapid prototyping: The developer only can make the project for just one company. Very expensive/costly. c) Cots: (Commercial off-The Shelf Software) This is the easiest and cheapest model. In this model the developer takes the model which already is exists and they make changes in that same model only according to the user requirement. Demerits of Agile: a) For this model it is difficult to make large projects. b) We should need to have proper planning and documentations. c) If the program will make in pairs then it will be much costly. 1.2) (a) SDLC (System development life cycle): images The System Development is consists of the following stages: a). Preliminary Investigation: The developer has to spend for some days to understand the problem; he can install the proper system. In this stage, the developer collects all the information available for the system which they need and he is also gathering the whole workers with him to collect the requirements for the system. b). Analysis of the Requirement: The developer understands the information and functions of the software which all he requires for the system. He briefly goes through the requirements and to develop the performance of the system. He also wants to get more information and resources to build the suitable system. c). System Design: The developer makes rough designs on paper or on the computer, to check whether the rough image of system includes all the requirements or not. Once this stage done, then he will choose and finalizes the suitable designs for the development of the system. d). System Coding: The developer translates the code or the program in machine language so that it can be readable easily. The coding step is time spending and it has many errors. e). System Testing: Once the programming stage done, then he tests the systems whether it is working according to the clients needs or not. And he corrects the error if there are any. f). System Implementation: This is the most important phase. In this stage the developer finally gives the system to the client and expecting for a positive response. g). System Maintenance: In this last stage, the developer wants to maintain the system and checks whether its working in the way he made it or not. Then he again maintains the system by removing the defects of flaws if happened. 1.2) (b) Rapid Prototyping: I would prefer rapid prototyping life cycle model to develop software for university works because it is one among the easiest and user friendly model. It does not require any team work and even for the non technical management it will be easy to understand. At each stage of development the progress details has to submit to the management. Here instead of presenting report we submit rough model. It will be more convenient as the management could see the development physically rather than theoretical documents. In universities any time there could be change in system or introduction of new courses. So if the management demands change in the software developing in the middle also it can be done easily. It indicates advantage over other models because complex models like water fall or spiral, if user demands changes it will be great loss because they have to follow step by step procedure and then make changes. It will consume more time and cost high. As this model is completely customer oriented theyll proceed only after the management finds satisfaction. LEARNING OUTCOME # 02 2.1 a) Feasibility Report: It is the end stage of a feasibility study. It verifies the effect of the changes suggested in feasibility study. This report used by management is brief and nontechnical to be understandable. In other words, feasibility report basically the report which gave the advice weather the project is feasible or not. Basically the report contains the summary of findings and recommendations, followed by documentations. The components of the feasibility report are the following: a) Cover letter: presents the report formally and indicates the findings and changes to be made briefly to the management b) Table of contents: an index to understand the location of each and every part of the report. c) Overview: it explains the reason for undertaking a feasibility study and includes the people affected by it and the names of the persons who conducted the study. a) Detailed findings: provides the details regarding the present system and its defects. b) Economic Justification: Here detailed cost comparison and cost estimations are presented. c) Recommendations and conclusions: Here the proposed changes and its effects on present system all are mentioned and as per the study a conclusion is provided for the report. d) Appendixes document to provide all the necessary documentation within the report for reference. b) Feasibility Study: The purpose of feasibility study is to find solutions or to investigate the tasks requirements and to determine whether its worthwhile/feasible to develop the system, collecting data or analyzing that how the project will be operate, relating it consulting the recommended business requirements. In other words, a feasibility study can help us to confirm the outcome of solution we are unaware off. A feasibility study becomes necessary when sometimes the customer is not an ideal customer. Thus it becomes necessary to confirm the assumption of project based on the client ideas. In expense terms its better to have feasibility than making poor decision from improper analysis. We should have basic information about business ideas to make the study best. We should know one or more business models or scenarios that might be used. Sufficient investigation about these models should be conducted to determine viability. A feasibility study cannot be just conducted by making few calls. For this early investigation is done before the study. For this we can seek committee member of business itself or consultant. It starts with the marketing feasibility to confirm if the present idea influences it by checking their current marketing. Its then proceeded by technical and financial feasibility by checking resources, location, current availability, budget of the project etc. since its essential to analyze before starting a project. If the idea goes with market availability, we can proceed with feasibility analysis and use it for feasibility study. 2.2) Impact of Feasibility Criteria on a System Investigation for a Garment Shop: Before starting up a garment shop a feasibility study can help us in increasing chance of our success by analyzing our ideas, shop localities, types of clothes, management staffs etc before starting. Let us discuss about the feasibility criteria on garment shop on social, economic and time scales. Social Factor: The garment shop is a socially responsible business; it has the responsibility to form a good impact on the environment as well. Earning profit is not only the aim of the project but also to provide a healthy environment with proper clothing. Introduction: I am going to explain that how a system investigation is held for opening a new garment shop and that what are the actual and basic techniques, needs and requirements at business scale. Regarding this I would make documentation on system investigation and would discuss that how user and systems requirements have been addressed. b). Descriptions of the Business: It is a clothing retail shop (a garment shop). c). Market Consideration: Clothing items and stuff would be targeted especially for teenagers and young adults; this would the starting point so it would b little bit challenging of course, especially keeping up with each of the seasonal trends. They always expect to have material to be available of their choice in color and size. Dissatisfaction of the customer in purchasing can bring lose in my sales. To store clothing in a temperature controlled ware house, cost varies. It can be reduced by proper inventory management. d). Management Team: Since it is a small-business, hiring staff increases costs dramatically, both in salary and taxes. To hire someone, looking for part-time help well in advance of the opening day would be suitable. I would provide them with adequate training on how to run the cash register, store policies and regulations, and information on the merchandise. e). Technical Specifications and Production Plan: I recommend purchasing retail fittings for the shop. These may include special needs such as display cases, racks, counters, cashier, landlines, credit cards, changing rooms for men and women and shopping bags and gift wrapping. As trend in the fashion industry is ever changing, a successful store always focuses on the latest trends and identifies which trends are on the least. A single mistake can bring great lose ending up in excessive goods, undetermined costs and collaborated brands names in the shop. And eventually causes destruction of the business. f). Marketing Plans: By adopting proper marketing strategies, I would create a buzz in the market about my clothing retail store business. Marketing would be done in such a manner that it grabs the attention of my targeted customers. For example, the design of the store and the stores website are made with the target customers in full consideration. Advertising would be done later since it needs to be well made in order to be successful and successful advertising can be costly. g). Financial and Economic Plans: A good location can do wonders to the success of any retail business. Realtors would give estimates on traffic patterns near the store location. Convenience factors, such as handicap access and parking are important for the success of the garment shop. If the store was already a clothing store, careful inquiries about the previous tenants are necessary. h). Evaluation and Conclusion: This system investigation provides a good outline and vision over the starting of the clothing retail store, committing to this plan would give a smooth start over the starting of a small business as such. However later on, modifications are necessary to keep up with new challenges introduced by this ever changing market. I would analyze about the other companies achievements and draw backs that I need to work on and get better. Then I would have extra working hours comparing to other shops and have staffs for working shifts.

1. Question: Why does Gatto think that school is boring and childish? How does Gatto’s depiction of school compare with your own elementary and secondary school experience? Answer: Gatto thinks school is boring because the teachers and students are bored with material. The students say they already know the material. I can compare my school experience to Gatto’s depiction of school. My experience in elementary was a breeze and easy. Then I entered secondary school and was shocked. I was shocked that I had nobody to hold my hand and tell me what to do. I was given assignments and dues dates. It was up to me to get them done in time. My teacher’s taught me with their opinion, I really didn’t learn by that kind of teaching. But I read the text and studied hard, a way that I learn the best. 2. Question: What, according to Gatto, are the six unstated purposes of public schooling? To what extent does your own prior educational experience support this bleak view of American education? Answer: The six unstated purposes of public schooling are as follows 1. Adjustive or adaptive function: more discipline then educating 2. The Integrating function: being made to be someone you are not 3. The Diagnostic and Directive Function: a lot of testing 4. The Differentiating Function: teachers holding back the students and not letting them achieve their goals 5. The Selective Function: students are being put down and not able to succeed 6. The Propaedeutic: students are taught to be robots and to do what they are told and not ask questions. This view sort of pertains to me. I was taught by the teacher’s liberal views and opinions. I was raised to respect to others opinions. But I don’t give into the thought or idea that I am to learn and think because my teacher told me so. Given the current state of technology and globalizing economy, do think most people would gain the abilities they need to survive and thrive through homeschooling? Answer: I think education is VERY important. I disagree that kids do not need to go to school, they need to go. I think the school system and teachers can make school more appealing to students by changing the way they teach. For example they can do group activities, hold class somewhere else other than a classroom; like Starbucks, outside in the grass, a park. Anywhere where its stimulating, that way each day is a question of where is class going to be today? Homeschooling is good if you are self disciplined. I was homeschooled the first three months of my senior year in 1997. I graduated in November 1997 instead of June 1998. It depends on the person, if you are a go getter and want a way out of the school system ( in my opinion holds you back), then homeschooling is the ticket. 4. Answer: In teaching my children to be â€Å"leaders and adventurers† and to â€Å"think critically and independently,† I would teach them the basics of right and wrong, respect their elders, and most importantly respect yourself. And to ask questions to why they have that opinion, you may be enlightened and see your opinion a different way. Asking questions and learning from them will make you smarter person. I believe my child will be successful in school and out of school, if I raise them with integrity, respect, good work ethics, and good morals. But in this day and age many parents cannot do that, due to the lack of time, lack of knowledge, and the lack of knowledge. I taught myself when I did the homeschooling program through BYU, it was hard not having an instructor to help me. And my parents tried to help but luckily I had internet access. My Reflection. In reading Against School, I thought it was written like a factual story. I did learn a lot about the history in how school used to be. Back in the early years, education wasn’t that important. What was important was money, race and social class. They used a lot of discipline as well. The teachers and students are bored with the material and with school in general. Often teachers teach with their opinions and what they have been taught. I think that if teachers learn with the students and be open minded with what they are teaching, the students may opt to want to learn and enjoy school. The Summary Against School is about a retired teacher named John Gatto. He explains how school is boring for the students and teachers. He feels that the students are bored because the teachers are bored too. Its same material year after year, same classroom year after year. The students want to learn freely instead of being forced to learn. He feels schools have changed our children into addicts and children into children. He also feels that we suppress our genius because we don’t know how to handle them. His solution is to let them be their own person and think for themselves.

Modernization theory Essay

Modernization theory focuses on the main idea that the processes which the currently developed countries went through are vital to achieving development in the underdeveloped and developing countries. Modernization is thought to take place in five stages according to the Rostow’s stage theory (Rostow 1960), namely; †¢ The traditional society †¢ Take-off preconditions †¢ Take-off †¢ Drive to maturity †¢ High mass consumption age The modernization theory is based on the idea of human progress according to Carneiro (2003) although according to Jones (1985) and McNeill (1990), the idea of human progress seemed unrealistic so long as man did not significantly influence the natural environment and as long as there was no perceptible change in the agrarian economies from one generation to the next. The developed countries are to serve an important role in helping the developing countries to achieve their level of development and serve as examples. Modernization traces its origin in the enlightenment era with the focus that progress in technology would help man overcome the challenges that the nature posed and man would have control over nature. Condorcet (1979) argued that moral values of people would change through economic development and technological progress, and therefore linked cultural change to economic development. Rostow (1961) argued that the economic effectiveness in the countries of low incomes is hampered by their social institutions and traditional cultural values. In these countries large population do not allow the individuals to save, as does the lack of strong work ethic (Giddens, & Griffiths2006). According to the Marxist version of the modernization theory, early industrial society was characterized by exploitation. Growth of the developing countries would result from the use of education and technology. Allocation of resources in the developing countries in an irrational way was linked to the drawback in the industrialization of these countries. In order for a country to develop, it was necessary to remove the cultural, institutional and organizational roadblocks on its way to modernization and allocate resources rationally. Modernization is, according to Inglehart & Welzel (2005), a process of the development of human where development of the economy triggers cultural changes which make democracy, gender equality, and individual autonomy increasingly possible. In addition to bringing out the root causes of the problems existing in the underdeveloped or developing countries, the theory also can help countries focus on means and ways of alleviating poverty by emulating the already developed countries. The theory puts strength to the fact that development is reachable, even by the underdeveloped and the developing nations and therefore can help the latter to put efforts to reach the developed world. The theory explains an important point why the developing countries cannot wake up one day and expect to see themselves developed, but that to achieve development, a particular process is followed-building the sub-processes in this process is of paramount importance to the countries of low economy. Dependency theory can be defined as an explanation of the development of the economy of a country’s or state’s development policy as influenced by the outside forces of cultural, economical, and political aspects (Sunkel, 1969). It is a system through which the developmental possibilities of the subordinate countries are disadvantaged and conditioned by the economic expansion and development of another country (Dos Santos, 1971). Dependency theory emanated in the 1950s with Raul Prebisch who was the director of the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and together with his colleagues was not comfortable with the way the developed economy in the developed nations failed to lead to growth in the poorer countries. According to him, the poorer countries exported the raw materials to the developed countries and yet received the same goods as processed goods and the earnings from the exports was not enough to fund the imports. Prebisch offered a solution for the poor countries to substitute imports and avoid use of their foreign reserves to purchase for imports of manufactured goods. Import substitution was hard to follow because of obstacles that were facing the poorer countries. These included: the possibility or ability of controlling their exports of primary products; political will as concerning desire or possibility to shifting from producing primary goods; and the inability of the small internal markets of the poorer countries which made them unable to support the economies of scale used by the richer countries to keep their prices low. International capitalism has been mentioned as the force causing dependency relationship According to Gunder (1972), contemporary underdevelopment is as a result of continued relationships-economic or others-between the developed and the poorer countries. Unlike imperialism which explains dominant state expansion, dependency explains underdevelopment-the result of imperialism. Dependency theory was developed as a result of combination of economic doctrine called structuralism, and Marxist sociology. It blamed the US intervention and the role of the Latin America in the world economy as failing to achieve development and its political authoritarianism as a result of its role in exporting raw materials in the world economy. America was said to suffer deterioration in the terms of trade by experiencing cheaper exports due to low wage resulting from surplus labor, and more expensive imports because, instead of the productivity gains being passed on as lower prices, they were going to the increasingly monopolistic industrial firms. Latin America would therefore, because of this free trade, not be able to accumulate surplus capital required to industrialize. The difference between developed and underdeveloped economies was said not only to be on state of the system of production, or simple difference of stage, but also to be of position or function within a single international economic structure of production and distribution. Poverty of the countries was blamed for the richness of some others, not because of any failure (Reid, 2007). Social exclusion of masses as a result of domination of the economy through industrial monopolies yielded to urbanization void of industrialization (Reid, 2007). As a payment to investments, the foreign investors required that the state discipline those demanding high wages leading to military dictatorship. Although their diverging points on the theory, there is an agreement in issues like the influence of external forces that developed world use to extend their interests abroad which includes foreign aids, communications, multinational corporations and other tools. In all the definitions there is an agreement that there exist two sets of states; the dominant and the dependent, centre and the periphery, the metropolitan and the satellite. All of the definitions point to dynamism of the relationship between the dominant and the dynamic country since the interactions between them tend to reinforce and intensify the unfair patterns (Ferraro, 1996). Like the Modernization theory which can be considered to be developed by different people, the dependency theory also is said to have arisen in three principle formulations. According to Reid (2007) the first principal formulation of the dependency theory focused on formal and institutional relationships such as trade relations and foreign trade, as factors which were sources to dependency. The second formulation treated the theory as a subfield of the refined imperialism theory of the Leninist and the analysis of capitalism by Marxist. The third formulation dealt with the two previous definitions. The theory has assisted in shedding light as concerns the exploitation existing in the monopolistic world market where countries with strong economies try to dominate over those with weak economies and create a monopolistic effect of trade. Continued use of foreign aid to the poor nations, which has seen countries being over-reliance to donors, has left poor countries with no solid alternatives than to pledge loyalty to the developing nations. The theory has helped in enumerating the disadvantages that can be acquired from capitalism especially where the capitalism is the influence to the establishment of relations between countries. The theory was criticized as eroding Latin American’s belief in selves, according to Lawrence Harrison, in addition to patronizing and paralyzing Latin America. The formulations were attacked as ignoring or undermining the other causes of underdevelopment such as internal social and cultural factors and were neglect of culture, race, gender and ethnicity. Besides, there were some countries like Asian countries which developed purely on a capitalistic system, and countries like Taiwan and South Korea developed through the ideas that have been propelled in the development theory (‘Dependency verses Dependency theory’). The theory has been blamed as indicating that for a country to succeed, it should join others who have succeeded in the exploitation of some, even if it does this on a regional level. It has been termed to be a strategy left only for the smaller third world countries with no real alternative market, and is no strategy at all. The dependency theory work has been blamed also for criticizing development in the third world, indicating that such development builds a society different from that at the core (developed world) and that there is no way the resulting society can be as that at the core. Development in the third world can be best described, as the dependency theory points out, development of underdeveloped and not as the advertised development. The similarities between the two theories can summarized as follows: †¢ Both theories concern themselves with the relationship between the underdeveloped and the developing with the developed countries. While the modernization theory is concerned with the view that the developed countries should serve as an example to the developing or underdeveloped countries for development purposes, the dependency theory explains the development of the country in relation to the outside forces or influences which may be as a result of the activities of the developed countries. Both therefore deal with and recognize that there exist the relationship between thee two types of countries. †¢ Both theories are consent to the idea that the developed countries have a superior hand in terms of the economy, over the developing or the underdeveloped world. The difference in this area is that the dependency theory seems to indicate an unfair dominance of the developed economies over the developing or underdeveloped ones, whereas the modernization theory views the relationship as health-that the developed economies can assist the underdeveloped or the developing ones †¢ Both theories do not give a one-sided explanation as concerns the causes of the low economic status in the developing or underdeveloped countries. While the modernization theory gives a critical look at the reason for the poor economic status of the developing or underdeveloped nations as being a result of the problems already existing such as overpopulation and lack of work ethics, it may be seen as neglecting the role of the developed economies in the resulting economic problems of the third word countries. In its explanation to the resulting economic difficulties in the third world, dependency theory has leaned unfairly away from the role played by the third world countries in resulting to their own economic problems. It has been blamed, as seen earlier, as neglecting the social economic factors that contribute to economic problems in third world countries. It can be seen to be unfairly explaining the problem as a result to exploitation and external forces. †¢ There are a range of modifications or disagreements arising among scholars in the development of the two theories Other differences †¢ While the modernization theory seems to explain the causes of poor economy in the third world as the result of the activities of the countries themselves for example through poor allocation of resources, and with a view to solving it, the dependency theory can largely be described as a criticism to the developed countries as being the cause to the problems of the economy in the third world. The modernization theory focuses on the internal causes of the poor economy in the third world, but the dependency theory focuses on the external influences †¢ The dependency theory is devoid of a clean sheet and proper strategy of solving the economic problem of the third world in a non fair market, to the event that it has been described as a ‘no strategy at all’. The modernization theory presents a way of solving the problems of economy affecting the third world such as substitution of imports, advance in use of technology and further education to improve economy. Common Interface (CI) Implementation Proposal Many digital broadcasters are adopting a variety of Conditional Access (CA) to protect their content when broadcasting through the digital mean. Viaccess, Iredeto, Conax and NagraVision are among the popular CA system adopted by broadcasters worldwide. Regional presence and commercial incentives from the different CA vendors affects the digital broadcasters adoption policy. A good example would be the India Cable box market. Figure 1 shows the affiliation of the different broadcaster operators and the CA vendors. Robert Lee Frost - Literary and Poetic Career - Research Paper Example In 1912, Robert Lee Frost was on the move again, this time across the seas to England. He sold his farm and everything he had worked for in America and decided to try his luck in full time writing in England. England proved to be good to his poetry career as his first two books were an instant success; these were A Boy’s Will, published in 1913 and North of Boston which was published a year later. He returned to the United States in 1915 where he settled with his family in Franconia, New Hampshire. He continued his teaching and writing career while here; he taught English at Amherst University from 1916 to 1938. He published his next books Selected Poems and New Hampshire in 1923. New Hampshire earned him his first Pulitzer. He Published the Collected Poems in 1930; this work earned him a Pulitzer a Russell Loines Poetry Prize (Meyers, 2001). Frost continued to give talks and lectures in many places where he was invited all across the United States. In 1937, his wife, Elinor died of heart-related complications. This was a big blow to Frost who continued to surround himself with work as a way of dealing with his loss. In 1939, the National Institute of Arts and Letters in New York awarded Frost a Gold Medal for his literal work. Family tragedy followed him the following year when his son killed himself. He continued to publish more poems and give more speeches and lectures wherever he went. He traveled extensively in Greece, Israel, the Soviet Union and England (Meyers, 2001). In 1961, Frost had the honor of reciting his poem â€Å"The Gift Outright† during the inauguration of JF Kennedy. Although he was not a graduate of any college, Frost held honorary degrees from prestigious universities such as Harvard, Princeton, Oxford, and Cambridge. His poetry was so good that it earned him four Pulitzers in 1994, 1931, 1937 and in 1943. His best-known work was titled â€Å"The Road Not Taken† and it is a simple yet deep exploration of the nature of man
